ERIN RUNS WITH THE TORCH
I read some other stuff about the torch flame in Erin's torch bearer supporting documents.
The Olympic flame symbolizes purity, the endeavor for perfection and the struggle for victory. The modern torch relay began in 1936 at Berlin to symbolize the link between the ancient and modern Olympic games.
The torch was lit by the sun in Olympia, Greece and then transported to Atlanta which is the last place the flame was on U.S. soil. It then started across the U.S. and 11,500 individuals participated in the relay. Runners were chosen by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, and corporate sponsors. Chevrolet chose 3,505.
There is a lot of good torch bearer info at the Salt Lake City 2002 website. You have to click around a bit. The San Francisco stuff is woefully Erin-free. They have Barry Bonds and a lady on the cable car and some other thing about Lombard street. What about Erin running by the Golden Gate bridge? Well, Willie Mayes didn't make the cut either. I think they could have given SF more space.
Shortly after Erin finished, the van picked her back up to take her to her car. Erin said when she went to get her car there were a bunch of kids there and they asked her to sign their flags and wanted to get their pictures taken with her.
Eventually we all met at Mel's Diner for breakfast. And after breakfast the Orleans people went home and Bob and I spent the day hanging out with Erin.
