"It Beats Pickin' Cotton and Waitin' to Be Forgotten"
QUICK!! BOOKS TO READ BEFORE MOVIE COMES OUT: Alex Garland (Leo's movie) The Beach, Jeffrey Euginedes (Sophia Coppola directs) The Virgin Suicides, Chuck Palahnuik (Brad and I think Ed Norton) Fight Club. MORE BOOKS: Kathleen Norris, The Cloister Walk (about this woman who lives in a monastery for 9 months), Maria Doria Russell, The Sparrow, (literary science fiction, if that isn't an oxymoron) Isabel Allende, Paula (incredible book), Philip Pullman, The Golden Compass & The Subtle Knife. Esp. Pullman -- these are young adult and sort of Chronicles of Narnia meets The White Mountains and are really, really good and too bad the 3rd of the trilogy won't even be out until '99.
MOVIES: Kundun (this is the Scorsese movie about the Dali Lama and is completely heartbreaking -- I could not stop crying). The Big Lebowski (Coen brothers rock), Simon Birch (10 hankies!) Pi (the only time I've seen my husband wide awake and grinning at the screen -- a thriller about math) The Matchmaker - chick movie, Janeane Garafalo in Ireland. Pleasantville -- the premise for this movie sounds cheesy but it was actually very clever and I liked it way more than I expected. MUSIC -- still stuck in the '80's.
MANUSCRIPT UPDATE
My manuscript is still sitting around waiting for someone to buy it although admittedly I've still been doing lots of tweaking on it. If you have connections, let me know. FYI to the people who have been asking to read it, by the time I copy it and get it bound and mail it to you -it costs me about $30, perhaps that explains something. In other news, I had a publication in a national magazine (Natural Health) this year but of course it was a letter to the editor that I had jetted off in a fury over this stupid article they published about how to have more stamina which seemed to say that if you had a cushy job, no commute, someone to do all your work for you and no obligations whatsoever, that you too could have lots of stamina -- what would you need it for? Anyway, had I known they would publish it -- I would have written a better letter and to add insult to injury -- they edited it so I sound like the biggest dork on the planet. So, I cancelled my subscription and really showed them.
Hope you all have fabulous HOLIDAYS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR.
