Nürnberg

Blog from the road:

Nürnberg

We took our first train ride from Frankfurt to Nürnberg. I was concerned because you look up your train car on this chart so you know where to stand when the train comes and our train car wasn't on the chart. When the train arrived the car number was taped to the window and I took this to be additional evidence that Frankfurt was unorganized. Later I realized the train arrived from somewhere else so maybe the entire country is losing its focus.

One of Nürnberg's most famous citizens was Albrecht Dürer. He was roaming around in the late 1400's and did all kinds of amazing art, etching and painting. His accomplishments are complex and beyond the scope of this little travel memo. We went to his house which they say is one of the last original medieval houses in the city. My notes on this one aren't extensive and I'm kind of confused with Goethe's house. There was a bunch of old stuff and reading between the lines, they just postulate where stuff actually was and what the rooms were used for. No one really knows.

During our stay we ate a scandalous amount of the famous Nürnberg sausages and if you were there, you would have too. During the Kristkindle Markt they were on every street corner. It was hard to say no. I also ate a giant crepe filled with Nutella, that was a bit much, but I felt it important to go with local custom.

Another excellent museum was the Germanisches Nationalmuseum which is huge and we arrived late and missed some of the exhibits which made Bob pout. But we did get to see works by our new friend Dürer and there's an amazing Church incorporated into the building with sculptures and carvings.

Finally, here's a link to the Dokumentationszentrum Reichsparteitagsgelände (watch my spell check go apeshit). This is an extensive exhibit documenting the rise of the Nazi party and very well done. We spent half a day there in the museum and also wandering around the grounds.
