No Carb Left Behind

Earlier this month I wanted to do 12 Days of Christmas with the Rentz girls but I could only find 3 photos. I just picked up another giant bag of photos on this trip so next year, watch out. I love this one because of the lederhosen and also the delighted expression on both our faces. We always had a really cool swing set in the backyard when we were little.

This morning I tried on my test pants. You know the pants you use to test how far gone you are? If you can zip them, you’re still okay.

I could zip them. Whew.

I think what saved me is the 10 lbs. of Fisherman’s Friend I’ve eaten in the last 2 months for the never-ending cough. They keep me from coughing and I can’t say they kill my appetite but they don’t do it any favors. It also helped that no one ever got around to making cookies.

Christmas was all good. California was great. I’ve enjoyed my time off. I accomplished about a third of the things on my list which is pretty good.

I even did the thing that’s been on my xmas vacation list for about 5 years that I always put off. I cleaned out my pantry. I took everything out and scrubbed down all the shelves and tossed all the outdated stuff. It’s always funny to find something that says Best By 2005 and you can’t imagine it’s been there that long.

Here’s a question: why do baking mixes come in goofy quantities? The instructions for making will call for 2 1/2 cups of mix but the package will have 3 1/2 cups of mix? What do you do with the extra mix? Yeah, duh, you could buy another mix but I’m not falling into their trap. I’m going to combine all our leftover mixes and make date muffin-cornbread-12 grain pancake something.

Bob and his new friend Shyboy having a Christmas nap.

I also finally tried that recipe for Ocean Rolls that I’ve been sitting on since summer. As usual I biffed it up a bit. I guess I need my recipes a little more hand-holdy than that one. After it was too late I found a site where someone had posted feedback and said that it was too much flour. My dough was pretty dry.

Then I couldn’t understand the instructions for shaping them so I wung it. When I opened the oven door to check progress, they’d all come unrolled and it looked like Medusa’s nightstand if she takes her snakes off when she showers.

They tasted terrific so I will definitely try again.

Tonight I’m having my favorite New Year’s Eve — the one where I stay home and reheat leftovers then go to bed by 9pm. I woke up at 5 this morning so I might go to bed earlier.

Happy New Year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 2011

(Aside: for those of you following along at home, this isn’t intended to be the final blog layout but it’s as far as I got given my slow learning curve and the time I could scrape together for this project.)

Usually I have a bad attitude at the beginning of the holiday season and gradually warm up to it. This year it’s the other way around. I’m hoping after I get my last 300 tasks crossed off my list I can be more filled with cheer again.

I decided to ditch the annual newsletter this year and just do a quick wrap-up post. Next year I’ll do a holiday tweet and the following year I’ll text “MC” to everyone and forever after that just send holiday greetings telepathically.

Hiking with Mom and Dad in the Salmon Mountain area.

There’s not a whole lot to wrap-up. If you’re a regular reader there is nothing here you haven’t seen 1000 times. In January we went to bluegrass. Bluegrass is good food.

I’m trying to bring my pie making to a new level so I made lots of pies. I finally found a pie crust recipe I could master and by master I mean, I can make it consistently without crying and hurling pie plates across the room.

First game for Timbers in Major League Soccer.

My biggest development is that I fell in love with the Portland Timbers like I’ve never fallen in love in my life. (Well, except for that one thing. {If you think you know what I’m talking about you’re probably right.}) I’m wearing a Timbers jersey right now. I never take it off. I got the world’s worst fan picture taken which I couldn’t escape. I went to Vancouver BC for the day to see my team. I loved every minute of last season and can’t wait to do it again next year.

Dahlias

I celebrated 15 years with my sweetie and 20 years in the PAC NW. I drank Tab and ate Twinkies for lunch when I was a teenager and everything still turned out okay.

San Diego reunion with my beloved Clarion West 08 class.

I am still writing fiction and here’s the pimptastic part of my post.

I sold another story this year.

The story is called “Lottie versus the Moon Hopper” and it’s in an actual book that you can buy called Future Lovecraft published by Innsmouth Free Press. It’s has a cool cover and lots of great stories. You should check it out.

If you’ve got a dollar and an ereader you can download this ginormous sci fi collection called The Second Science Fiction Megapack published by Wildside Press that includes a reprint of my story “The Battle of Little Big Science.”

Finally, I’m continuing my tradition of putting up a story for the holidays. This year’s story is called Freezing. I wrote it for the Machine of Death 2 anthology but they didn’t take it. It was just sitting around in the basement so I dragged it out, dusted it off, and offer it to you here. Nothing says Happy Holidays more than a story about how people die. Enjoy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Hope you have fun, whatever you’re doing.

DEATH TO CLICKING

I’m in the process of updating my webcrap. I couldn’t finish today (long rant omitted) and I had to go back to my old theme or whatever b/c then new one does that thing where I’m supposed to click on every single post to open it up and find out what the hell it says. (I’m trying to find some stuff in the archives for my holiday wrap up). I can’t wait until I’m in charge of everything because things will be a lot less stupid.

Also, I think every youngster who designed one of the many tutorials and wizards I had to do today should have to sit next to me while I do it. They would be designed a lot better.

Trolls

Fremont Troll photo courtesy of Alexabboud.

I told my sister I found a photo where we looked like little trolls. Those drop waists aren’t doing anything for us. You’d be sad to hear how much time I spent trying to find a troll photo and trying to make this. I screwed something up and then went back to fix it and screwed it up more and then kept trying to fix it instead of doing the sensible thing and giving up.

There you go. Enjoy.

I am going to be doing some behind the scenes tweaking on both my website and my email and if history serves as any kind of warning I’m going to get it just to the point where it exceeds my technical skills and then completely fark it up and then get frustrated and make mulled wine and go sit on the couch and watch Firefly and avoid the computer for several days.

If I disappear from here and you can’t find me on email, you should just assume I quit the Internet.

It was nice knowing you.

You Give Me Fever

When I worked at the law firm there was a parking lot on the adjacent block that was developed into an office building. (Dec 2007.)

I’ve never been able to understand people who get sick all the time and say things like, “this is my fourth cold this winter.” How can you get 4 colds in one winter?

It took forever for them to pound those beams into the ground. (May 2008)

I’m the kind of person who gets sick about once a year. Sometimes I go an entire year without getting sick and every once in awhile I might get sick twice in one year. Once I get sick I know I’m done with it for awhile which is why my entire world was turned upside down when I woke up a couple of nights ago coughing my face off and discharging quarts of goop into tissues that piled in a heap by the bed.

I haven’t been back over there in awhile and walked over there last week.

Remember I just did this? I was sick for most of the month of November. Never in my life have I been sick for 3 1/2 weeks and then healthy for 2 weeks and then gone back down again. There I was, back on the couch, nostrils returned to their chapped state. I huddled under my blanket, whining and complaining, and drinking peppermint tea.

And it’s not like I’m engaging in high risk activities. I don’t run around outside in the middle of the night in my bare feet, eating Doritos and drinking beer. I don’t let small children put their fingers in my mouth. I don’t suck on the door handles of public places.

Building is finished and there are people in there. They’ve got a Starbucks which is a huge relief because it means that in a 5 block strip of that street, there are 3.

I do not understand how this happened. I’ve been going over it in my head and trying to figure out what’s different. Aging? Well, maybe. But you know what else?

I quit taking vitamins.

Violent Pink Popcorn

This is cinnamon flavored popcorn that came in a giftbox to the office. Normally I’m all grown-up and formal about such things like we need to eat all the pretzels before we open the cheese corn. Not this time. We’ve opened every single thing and tried it, often before 8am and once after we ate a giant lunch. It’s never too early to start packing on the holiday handles.

I wrote out a long story about how my health insurance had been making me insane the past couple of days. But I think its too long to be interesting so I’m going to give the short version.

I need some basic information so I logged into the main website which was totally worthless. Then, anxious to share these feelings, I clicked on the Feedback tab. The Feedback tab wanted me to create a feedback account, which obviously I am not going to do, and then if I understand correctly, I was going to be posting my feedback on a community board.

In what Universe is that going to do anything?

Later I found a different URL and tried to login but it didn’t recognize any of my numbers that it asked for. (And zeroed out the form each time so I had to re-complete all the fields . Thanks for nothing.) It said if the numbers didn’t work to call the phone number.

I called the phone number and guess what? It was a phone tree that demanded the same numbers that didn’t work on the website. No work around that I could discover.

It took a half hour and a giant bag of chocolate-caramel popcorn before I could stop foaming at the mouth. I don’t want to talk about work here but there are good reasons I didn’t ask someone there first. But I finally did and got enough info to proceed.

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof

This is one of those “make it look like a miniature” tutorials. But it’s kind-of a cheat because the photo looked like a miniature before I did my magic.

Turns Out This Tutorial Has A Page 2

I’ve been repeating the tutorials a bunch of times to help me learn better. Most of the time I understand how to do the steps but I’m not always sure what each step accomplishes.

I did this tutorial three times before I realized there’s a page 2. I still haven’t done page 2.

This one gets me practice with the pen tool. Luckily I remembered pretty quick because pen tool is a pain to learn. The hard part, which I’ve written about before, is that I mouse right-handed. I would love to go back in time and figure out why I did that. But after 20 years, I can’t mouse with my left hand.

I got the tablet out and tried to just use my left hand but it was hopeless. So I’m currently doing this crazy two-handed thing where I draw left-handed on the tablet but do all other clicking with my right hand.

If I get good at it there might be a documentary about me some day.

Bottles of Pills

I’ve never been a diehard vitamin taker but I’ve been a fairly regular vitamin taker. Several days a week I’d knock back a multivitamin and mineral and a vitamin C the size of school bus plus a few other nutrients in a pill. Some article would tell me how one vitamin would make me age backwards and another would reduce moodiness and combination of a bunch would help me remember things that happened before 1975.

Then I read an article that said that after tons of studies, scientists determined that vitamins don’t do anything.

So I stopped taking vitamins. Instantly. Just like that.

I also quit making a point to eat breakfast when I read an article that said breakfast is not the most important meal of the day.

When I had the idea for this post I’m not sure where I wanted to go with it. Mostly I think it’s funny that I will alter my behavior after simply reading an article.

But then I’ve read lots of health-related articles that I completely ignored. I guess I listened to these two because I never noticed a measurable benefit from vitamin taking or eating breakfast. In fact, a lot of classic breakfast foods make me sleepy.

I have no concluding sentence.

Remember Summer

Awhile back I read this news story about a guy who died and was cryogenically frozen. He was being stored with his wife who died before him and was cryogenically frozen and also his second wife who died before him and was cryogenically frozen.

Isn’t that going to be awkward? What was the second wife thinking? Obviously the first wife isn’t going to be too happy when she’s thawed out and finds out there’s a new wife. And no doubt there will be a high profile lawsuit because the first wife is no longer a wife. Or is she? Will new legal definitions need to be created for people who are cryogenically frozen? But then if the first wife is still the wife then the second wife is going to be pissed. Those ladies are both going to want something their troubles. I hope he has a lot of money set aside.

Maybe the guy arranged for a “complication” so that one of the wives can’t be unfrozen. But if that backfires then he’ll be up for murder. Or he could not thaw them out concurrently. I guess that depends on what the future of health care is like. If they all died of old age and are then thawed out, does that mean that old age has been cured? He’d just have to keep one frozen. Or he could thaw both and try to keep them a secret from each other and have to run back and forth between two households.

I don’t think he planned this very well.
