Timbers Jet Roll-In

Long busy day. I need to do this quick because I need to get on the road for another home game tonight.

Guess what I did this morning?

Another Timbers dorktastic special event at the airport.

Everyone at the Alaska Airlines ticket counter had their green on.

Welcome!

Here’s everyone gathered at the gate.

Even the ground crew wears Timbers scarves.

Our fearless leader Merritt Paulson tells us the flight is going to be 30 minutes early. That balloon behind him makes it look like he has a halo.

The tail!

Timbers Jet.

We’re told it’s going (it went) to Las Vegas today. I said: Let’s go to Vegas.

Of course we couldn’t because we have a game tonight.

I just picked up my computer and it’s working like a dream so I feel like a regular person again. Lots more photos and updates later this weekend.

Soccer City, USA

Well Crap.

I didn’t even get around to doing my best day ever first home opener as an MLS team post and at this point, I have to leave the house in 15 minutes so I can go to another game. I’m already behind.

And I even have notes here so I wouldn’t forget all the details.

Here is a quickie version and I’m posting without proofreading. Living on the edge.

There’s the park. I don’t know how long the game has been sold out, the line to go in started at Noon, gates opened for Timbers Army 107 minutes before the game. They have general admission in their sections. Gates open 90 minutes before game time for everyone else.

Parking is not encouraged anywhere near the field. I think the street rate is $3.50 but I heard the limit was 90 minutes. We left the car at the office parking. It’s less than a mile to walk to the stadium.

All the VIPs on the field congratulating each other on getting MLS to Portland and the media crush capturing the moment.

I missed the photo but the cotton candy guy stopped at the end of our row and took some pictures before he went back to selling.

My team with the sacrificial children.

Timbers Army sings the national anthem. Clip if you want to watch. It’s actually pretty cool. They had fireworks during the national anthem. I’m sure it’s regulation but they brought out a fire extinguisher which was hilarious considering there was steady never-ending rain shower all day and all during the game.

Our seats are 90% protected. There was a little drip when the wind shifted. Once again, grateful for plastic pants! Plus the walk to and from the stadium. My feet were cold but otherwise I was comfortable.

The team takes the field. You can tell how rainy it is in this shot.

We won. Counting the goal that was called back and the own goal we scored 6 times! But only 4 counted for this game. Our first win in MLS.

I had been building up this event in my head for so long and how spectacular it was going to be. It got to the point where I was thinking nothing on earth is going live up to my expectations.

I was wrong. It was awesome. I loved every minute of it. Our seats are fantastic and we sit right behind the players bench so I could watch the coach and how he interacts with the players and the little dramas on the field.

Great day and I now have to put on my game clothes and I get to do it again.

But that dumb picture will never die.

The Power of Plastic Pants

In the tunnel at Merlo Field.

Do you ever see sports on TV and the weather is terrible and you see the fans in the stands and think, “Who would sit and watch sports in horrible weather? I would never do that.”

I used to think that, too.

But last Tuesday night I sat in steady rain for two hours to watch soccer. And I stayed dry-ish thanks to the magic of plastic.

Timbers

A couple of weeks earlier it occurred to me that a day would come where I’d be watching soccer in the rain. I mentioned to my ticket partner that we should go to the Columbia store and get plastic pants. The flagship store is right across the street from the office.

We ran in there and after a few questions (“What sort of activity will you being doing?” “Uh, watching Timbers games.”) a nice man took me right to the plastic pants.

“These look so dorky,” I said. I’m not sure why I expected waterproof pants to be sexy or why I’d waste any time worried about vanity after the axe picture.

He explained that these were made for things like golfing in the rain and they can be folded up and then whipped out over your regular clothes if it rains.

I bought them and brought them to Seattle where it did rain. I put them on and they fit just fine but our seats were protected so no rain fell on me. They did help keep me warm.

Coach Spencer, glad to see me at the game.

One thing about soccer is that in addition to the actual league games, there are also exhibition games and side competitions. I don’t understand it all myself and I don’t feel like doing the homework. I’m sure I’ll understand it all by the end of the season. Tuesday night’s game was for the U.S. Open Cup.

I think there’s a little rain protection when we get into our seats at the stadium but that won’t be ready until later this month so the game was at Merlo Field which is at University of Portland with no cover at all.

It wasn’t terrible. My rain gear kept me dry although the metal seat was cold and damp under my delicate heinie. Only my hands stayed wet and were pruned after two hours.

But we won and it was a fun game. April 14 is first home game.

We Are Timbers

It took me a long time to decide whether I wanted to write about this or not. I generally don’t mind writing about humiliating things but there are occasionally events that I can’t bear to revisit in public.

My soccer team has this ad campaign where they use fans.

They did a promotion where you could go to their store and they were going to have a professional photographer and you could get your picture taken like the ads. I can’t tell you how excited I was about this.

I wore my team jersey to work and I trotted down there right when the store opened. You could hold either an axe or a chainsaw. I picked axe.

Then I waited for a week, telling everyone that I got my Timbers photo taken and I couldn’t wait to put it on Facebook and my website.

This photo is copyright all rights reserved Portland Timbers which I think technically means I’m not supposed to use it except they said they wanted to see these photos everywhere like on FB or whatever.

Isn’t it adorable? Obviously, not mine.

And then I saw the photo.

I am not one of those people who says, “OMG! What a terrible photo of me” and I generally find unflattering photos of me pretty funny. But this photo is so terrible it put me in an existential funk for almost a week. I look like a cross-dressing caveman who has been going too heavy on whatever the opposite of botox is and just woke up on a park bench after a three day bender.

Now I’m sure you’re dying to say, “Oh come on, it can’t be that bad.”

My dear husband, who thinks I am the most beautiful woman alive, even 5 seconds after I get up in the morning said, “Well, if you look at those photos, a lot of those people look pretty bad.”

And my colleague, who I regularly mock for taking horrible photos, he shook his head and said, “I’d love to kick you when you’re down, but I just can’t.”

I’ve gone back and looked at it a number of times, thinking that I’d get over it or that I’d misjudged and was just disappointed it didn’t come out better. Nope.

I thought about contacting them and asking them to burn it but ultimately decided that I would just pretend it never happened.

Meanwhile, they are using those photos for all kinds of ad campaigns. They’re have a checkerboard with 24 photos in the newspaper or whatever and every time I see one I am overcome with dread.

It seems like they’re picking the good ones so maybe I’ll escape further humiliation.

But now I can’t stand the sight of my jersey. I had to put it in the back of the closet.

TIMBERGASM

A couple of months ago co-worker got a notice from the Timbers telling him that as season ticket holders we were invited to a fashion show debuting the team’s jerseys. The event would take place in an airplane hangar at the airport.

He said, “We don’t want to do this do we?”

I replied: “A soccer fashion show in an airplane hangar? Of course we want to do it. It sounds DORKTASTIC.

For the one of my three loyal readers who isn’t fully with the program I’ll explain a few things.

I’ve never followed a professional sports team in my life.

And last year I shared in a season ticket for the Division 2 soccer team, the Timbers.

We are an expansion team and are joining Major League Soccer next year.

I am a full-fledged season ticket holder for MLS. Right now the team is doing a million things for the fans. We get emails every couple weeks for some exclusive fan event.

Timbers just opened a store downtown about 4 blocks from the office. Co-worker and I are going on Monday to buy each other Christmas presents.

I get really irritated whenever I read articles about how “Americans don’t like soccer.” Sure, some Americans don’t like soccer. But LOTS of them do. Some Americans don’t like football, basketball or baseball. Hello!

Check out the MLS stats page for attendance (scroll down). Seattle Sounders average is 36,173. The next highest average is LA with 21,436. The PACNW loves its soccer.

Our team has partnered with Alaska Airlines, one of the few giant corporations that I am extremely loyal to.

For the event we had to leave our cars in a gravel lot and shuttle to the hangar. Of course today we got about eight feet of rain.

I had no idea what to expect but it’s a work day and not super convenient. I figured there would be maybe 50 fans and a few players running around in the new jerseys.

I was wrong.

It was huge. There were zillions of fans. There was free booze and food.

There was a drum and flag squad.

Then they drove our custom TIMBERS airplane into the hangar. The fashion show models came out of the plane including a bunch of players for our team.

It was freaking awesome. It was the best jersey launch ever. (That’s what they told us and I didn’t know they even scored these things, but I’m glad I was at the best one.)

I can’t wait to buy my gear on Monday.

Big Giant Wrap Up Of All Things (For Now)

Party Beverage Crew preps for the party.

World Cup is Finished: Games 63 and 64

Game 63 between Germany and Uruguay was pretty fun considering everyone was bummed to be there and only wanted to win because it would be better than losing. Germany had a bunch of different players including a goalkeeper named Butt: I hope he names one of his kids Stinky. I liked Uruguay a lot, esp. Diego Forlan, but I was still glad Germany won.

Game 64, the final between Spain and Netherlands, was a turd. The players were whiny and brutish. The pace was clonky. The ref should have gotten the trophy.

I’m glad Spain won.

And I’m glad the tournament is finished.

I went to a Timbers game last night — only 4 more home games plus an exhibition. At least for now. Plus a Sounders in Seattle in August. But otherwise I’m winding down. (Heh heh)

Last night Timbers played Miami. At one point the kids sitting behind us yelled: Put in LeBron. Later when the Timbers scored, this kid who had brought a plastic piggy bank modeled after the World Cup trophy ran to the front of the stands and held it up. He was wearing a Barcelona FC jersey. It didn’t even make sense. He got sent back to his seat.

Cranky bear takes it out on the utility pole.

4th of July Weekend

The night before we left on our trip there was a surprise playoff game between the Timbers and rivals the Seattle Sounders. The stadium was sold out. The scene was insane — loud and boisterous. The game was fantastic and went into overtime and then to penalty kicks. It was a late kick-off anyway and with all the extra stuff I didn’t get home until 11:30pm. So I was completely thrown off schedule by a worthy cause (except we lost by 1 PK).

(Also quick Sounders question: what is that name of that color for the uniforms: “booger”?)

Then I had to get up at the crackass of dawn so I could take care of all my last minute stuff so we could be on the road by 8am to drive to California.

Trip went smooth. We had a big party weekend in honor of my Dad’s 80th birthday. It was perfect weather. Tons of great food. Awesome company. Everyone helped out. Now that I sit here to write this, I don’t have any details. I was so frazzled getting down there I didn’t even have my little notebook. I always have my little notebook. It was an epic party. I’ll put more photos on Facebook.

The Pamily

We’ve had this smoked salmon in the freezer and I keep forgetting about it. I finally went online to look for some recipe ideas.

I found one for smoked salmon and sausage chowder that sounded promising even if it isn’t really chowder weather. The “sausage” part of the recipe was chopped pepperoni sticks. Why would you even think of that?

I ended up making a sort of dip thing to spread on crackers that wasn’t wonderful and a pasta thing that was only okay. I think the problem is that this is some stout smoked salmon. It was like forest fire smoked salmon. I think it would better served as a nibbling snack on a warm afternoon with cold beer to wash it down.

Party! Note my bday gift to my dad: a custom authentic German National Team jersey.

Last note related to the Timbers game. Don’t you love it when you joke around with random strangers? Rather than cracking a joke and having a random stranger look like they’re about to call the police? I joke around with random strangers a lot because I’m uncomfortable in social situations and this is how my coping has evolved.

Before the games, co-worker and I go to this sports bar next to the stadium for burgers and beer. The booths are always full when we get there but we like this terrible little table that’s between the doors to the restrooms and the edge of the bar. They keep the brooms and vacuum right there.

There’s a TV right above the table and there was a guy standing in front watching it. We asked if it was okay to sit down and he said sure.

I struggled to get my chair out with the brooms right there and said: We like to sit by the vacuum.

The guy sad: Well, yeah. That’s the best spot most places.

He stood there a minute longer and then said: I’m going to move along. It’s creepy to stand here while you two are sitting there.

Oh well, seemed funny at the time.

Last item for this post:

I just went through my comment spam and this is my favorite, I wish it was a real comment:

“I didn’t quite get the point this to begin with. But when I read it a fourth time, it all started to make sense. Thanks for the insight. Absolutely something to spend some time on.”

Clarion West Write-A-Thon Week #1

The reason I took this photo is to show Thighs. See the guy with his shorts pulled up? I’m not sure what’s up with that. The people on our left call him Mr. Funny Pants. The people on our right call him Diaper Boy. I shouted: “Pull down your pants!”

4200 words for the Write-A-Thon this week.

I’ll be honest, they aren’t great words. But I put something new down every day this week.

Thanks to all my sponsors so far. I’m still a bit short of my goal so if you’ve like to donate there’s more about the Write-A-Thon here and my donation sponsor page here.

And if you’re not sure what to do, just drop me an email.

Oh yeah, and if you haven’t seen it yet, here’s my tuckerization by Michael Swanwick.

Timber Joey — would you like to touch his wood?

FIFA World Cup Games 51 and 52

Germany looked FANTASTIC this morning. I’d like to take Podolski’s ’32 goal out for drinks some time. A really fun game. Oh yeah, bad call against England. That was a black mark. But 4-1 England it’s not like they were looking so great until that moment.

I talked to my Mom after the game and she said she saw the last 10 minutes and “it was a really good game.”

“Mom,” I said. “Germany was up 4-1 at that point. The game was over.”

“I know,” Mom said. “But I get so nervous that was the only part I could watch.”

During the Germany game I started making up a Tiger Beat profile for Phillipp Lahm.

Favorite color: blue
Favorite food: schnitzel
Favorite Twilight character: Bella

In the next game Germany is up against my mullet-licious boyfriends from Argentina which is really a bummer because I like both these teams so much. I’ll be rooting for Germany.

I watched the first half of the Argentina v. Mexico game. In this game, Argentina won a goal that they didn’t really earn because of another bad call. They won 3-1 so I think they proved themselves. I decided to stop watching after goal #3 because I had some other things that needed to get done before I went downtown to watch another soccer game.

Timbers v. Tampa Bay

Finally, the Timbers win one. Warm sunny day. Cold beer.

There’s a guy in our section a few rows back who’s a screamer who seems to enjoy screaming more than paying attention to the details of the game. One of his favorite things to scream is, “Both ways, ref. Both ways.”

I have no idea what that means but the kids sitting behind us took this up — in a hilarious way — and started saying at completely random times: “Both ways ref, both ways.” Which made us laugh every time.

FIFA World Cup Games 24, 25 and 26

PGE Park FOOD. I figured out that this new layout is too narrow for my standard photo crop. Sheesh. God-forbid a two column layout shouldn’t have a mile of dead space margins. What’s so great about wordpress again?

Ghana v. Australia 1-1

I had another obligation today so I only watched one game live. Not this one. Turns out I picked the most boring game.

I watched the highlights show and then pulled this one up on my DVR. Wow, Australia with the early red cards. It’s like you’re inventing a new sport.

Netherlands v. Japan 1-0

Snore. What a boring game. Netherlands, I loved visiting your country. I dare you, woo me. But also, how does this team do it? Do they sneak extra players on the field? Everywhere you look: orange shirts.

Restroom sign at PGE park. I love the restrooms at soccer games because the ladies: never a line!

Cameroon v. Denmark 1-2

Highlights reel made this game look good, too. But I didn’t watch it. I decided to do some writing today.

Italy and Brazil tomorrow. Not playing each other. Don’t disappoint me gentlemen.

Timbers

I went to another soccer game this week. I love soccer. One more year until World Cup.

Check this out. Five minutes before game time and this is the women’s restroom. There’s no one in there.

My favorite co-worker is the one handing me a beer.

Delicious cheese product snack.

Timbers’ Army. This part of the stadium was completely packed. One of these days I’m going to sit in that section because it looks super fun.

The Timbers mascot — is there any other team mascot that runs around with a chainsaw? I tried a bunch of times to get photos but this was the best I could do.

Timbers won 1-0. That annoying guy who sits behind me and talks during every single public arena event I attend was there in full force. He left for the john, which I know because he announced it, and right when he left was the only score of the game. Awesome!

The smoking section during the half. Packed.

Timbers

Tonight we went to a Portland Timbers Game. It was so fun (It was also $1 beer night). They’ve renovated the park and I was only there once before for a women’s World Cup game but I guess it’s more earthquake safe now and lots of other nice amenities. I note that there are lots of women’s restrooms. Timbers won. I’m ready for more stuff at PGE park.
